The Weeping Woman series of Paintings shows pathetic female subjects, a motif that is commonplace in the history of 20th century art, as is the portrayal of feminine grief by male artists ranging from Picasso to Balthus. My work re-imagines the gendered melodrama figure of the weeping woman as an expression of queer embodiment. Each painting depicts a different paper model. The series is inspired by things like cubism, masks, architectural models and dolls.
Although the Weeping Woman paintings evoke the trompe l’oeil tradition, each piece depicts a mess of confusing shapes, extrusions and orifices. The translation of 3-dimensional sculptures to canvas compels the subjects to come apart and brings them to the edge of abstraction. This is a series I’ve been able to exhibit in a small group show and I’m seeking an opportunity to continue this project at a larger scale.
